WHO WE ARE
Auntie's Bookstore is Spokane's literary landmark! We are a full-service independent bookstore that carries both new and used books, greeting cards, t-shirts, Spokane specialty items and other gifts to bring home for yourself or your favorite bibliophile.
We offer bookstore credit for your gently used books. We hold events, signings, and so much more! Our booksellers love books and are looking forward to helping you find your next great read. If you're looking for a book and we don't have it in stock, we can get most orders in just a few days.
In 1978, business partners Chris O'harra and Shannon Ahern started the Book & Game Company in the Spokane Flour Mill, selling books, games, puzzles, and collectibles.
In 1985, with their business expanding, Book & Game decided to open a new location specializing almost exclusively in books. Thus, Auntie's Bookstore was opened at 313 W Riverside Avenue and included a small cafe.
Needing more space, the company purchased the old Kemp and Hebert building in 1993. Located on the corner of Main and Washington, it was renamed The Liberty Building. After a renovation and remodel, Auntie's moved into its new home in 1994 and has been here ever since.
During its time, the Book & Game Company spawned numerous other stores and locations including Merlyn's Comics and Games and Uncle's Games. In 1999, Ahern sold his interest in the bookstore to O'harra, leaving her the sole owner of Auntie's for the next 17 years.
The current owner of Auntie's Bookstore is John Waite, who purchased the business in 2016. Waite, who also owns Merlyn's, worked for and with Book & Game since the early days and is well acquainted with how much the store means to the Spokane community.
