The only child of long-divorced, mismatched parents, Poppy Koslowski has a lot to deal with. There is her recent hysterectomy which, even to a lesbian, brings a sense of loss; a family request to take her dying grandfather off life support; and the trip down memory lane which is the subtext of every family visit. This book has warmth, charm, hilarious AA meetings, and a strong network of female characters. For all readers, both gay and straight, Shaken and Stirred is an engaging mid-life tale by a talented Idaho writer.

His irritation is boundless, his language often profane, but I often agreed with comedian Adam Carolla’s rants on modern life. Conceit about owning a rescued pet, racial stereotypes, and our society’s dependence on the welfare system gripe this author, but so do oversized hotel pillows, the distance between the underside of the couch to the floor, and all manner of other peevish details. This guilty pleasure of a book made me laugh until tears came to my eyes.

Let yourself fall for this cautionary tale by a local talent who has raked in national acclaim! Jess Walter is at his sparkling best with this tale of a downsized journalist who uses home equity to start an online financial website that puts its advice in poetic form. With a gigantic mortgage due,his family will be out on the street if he doesn’t start dealing pot---or so he tells himself. Both irreverent and tenderhearted, this is one novel you can’t miss!

Though he is not an optimist by temperament, British science author Matt Ridley has written a brilliant study to support his theory that human circumstances will continue to get better and better, just as they have throughout the history of our species. I find Mr. Ridley to be quite cheery and a purveyor of fascinating facts. The Rational Optimist is full of fascinating comparisons of lifestyles of Homo Sapiens versus Neanderthals, land bridge crossers versus island dwellers, and many more. If you liked Guns, Germs and Steel and you want to be the go-to conversationalist at parties, treat yourself to a copy of The Rational Optimist.
