The story begins with the narrator recovering in a hospital after an unknown accident has left her alone and with out all of her memory. The narrative thread bounces from memory to memory in a non-linear fashion which despite sounding daunting is easy to follow and makes a great story all the more interesting. What the reader begins to discover is a main character who is angry and unable to deal with the suicide of her mother some years ago. She is both promiscuous in relationships and distant but also longing for something greater within those relationships. You get a sense that the main character is afraid to be known. Malone has a knack for writing scenes and transports the reader very vividly into the landscape and culture of Hawaii and you very much feel as if you're getting a locals look into island life.
