This dark and convoluted tale of a futuristic United States in the midst of economic collapse and major drug addiction will keep you up at night. A deft hand with horrific scenarios ( read The Terror, $7.99 from Little, Brown) Simmons blends a murder case with a nightmare of warring factions and a dollop of black humor ( the hero lives in a cubicle inside a former Baby Gap in a mall condo). A seriously good, scary novel.

Picture a fantasy noir setting where magic surges and ebbs and leaves mercenary and investigator Kate Daniels tangling with messy paranormal problems. The taut storyline and well crafted characters made me quickly reach for the next book in the series. Fans of Patricia Briggs and Jim Butcher will enjoy.

This classic ghost story is filled with twists and turns and myriad possessions. It reminded me of Koontz' earlier novels, which were some of my favorites. Crisp dialogue, a chilling villain and a touch of dark humor make this story one I'll be keeping.
