Alexis- Miss Tiny Dancer
Bio:

I spend most of my time baking pies, cookies and other assorted treats trying to fatten up my coworkers, so I can eat them....oh...I mean *ahem*...because they are all so fantastic of course! I also enjoy dreaming about being a beekeeper, snuggling with my kitty Samson (yes he does have long hair), wearing dresses, heels and pearls, hiking and being outdoors and of course, ruining my eyesight with reading.

I am going to school through University of Washington to be a Children and YA Librarian but that certainly doesn't mean I only read children's literature. I went to EWU for English Lit and Creative Writing and I love to give suggestions on great reads!

I almost have no words for this book. This is a graphic novel at its artistic best; Chris Thompson pulls out all his talent to create mystical and unforgettable images. The story involves two children who are sold into the slave trade, their lives together and apart and the love that they share. It is a powerful and haunting story that you will not soon forget.

Jane Goodall is an inspiring figure for children. She is a woman who had a dream as a child and fulfilled it. This picture book tells the simple story of that dream and how she accomplished it. The illustrations are sweet, innocent and magical. This is perfect for inspiring kids to live their dreams.

Of course, as a future Librarian, this has to be one of my favorites. But really, this book is just a sweet story about a boy who wants to know EVERYTHING and the whimsical Librarians who help him and support him throughout his childhood. The illustrations have a silly cartoon quality and they will keep kids giggling the whole way through. This is a good read for children to learn about how Librarians can help them and also a good read to show future Librarians how they should aspire to be.

Nothing is more magical and or nostalgic than this lovely picture book. Stars are everywhere, you can carry them in your pocket, give them to your friend, feel like one, or reach for them; this book is a must for any child. The illustrations are some of my favorite of any children’s book; they are reminiscent of the innocence and imagination of childhood. I cannot recommend this book highly enough.

While this book is a child’s classic, and I will recommend it to every little girl, there is also so much more to discover when reading it as an adult. Anne’s romantic ideals are nostalgic and a beauty to read. The author writes wonderful flowing descriptions that lead you to believe that it is Anne herself writing. The story is heart-warming and is completely timeless. No matter how old I get, Anne of Green Gables will always captivate and inspire me.

This book is a wonderful achievement in artwork and storytelling. Hugo is a boy who is an orphan, a clock keeper, and a thief and his world comes unraveled when his most precious secret is put in jeopardy and a mechanical man holds secrets about his father. The story is told using words but also beautiful pencil illustrations. You won't want to stop reading! Also, this author has a new book that just came out entitled Wonderstruck, which is definitely worth reading as well.

Tina Fey is just fabulous. If you love her already, you won’t be able to put this book down, if you don’t love her then you will. This book reveals some very interesting insight into the production of movies and tv shows she has been in, mostly with 30 Rock. You would think the head write and star of her show would be self involved but she really is not, she is not afraid to share explicitly embarrassing events of her life that will get you laughing at her and at yourself. This is a perfect entertaining read.

You cannot go wrong with Alice Walker. She is wonderful at distributing female power and inspiration. These poems are simple, short and straight to the point but that doesn’t stop them from being eloquent and powerful. She includes simple penned illustrations that are beautiful and fit with the feel of the book. For those going through hardship, these poems will help you remember your inner strength.
